Eventually,
all things merge into one, and
a river runs through it.
The river was cut
by the world's great flood and
runs over rocks from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops.
Under the rocks are the words, and
some of the words are theirs.

four aboard were not seriously injured. The two troop-carrying

place."

Richard Carney
Richard
Carney, 23, Grass Valley, died Saturday night despite frantic
attempts of the Sierra County Sheriff’s department and Alleghany
friends to revive him after he collapsed while trying to start a
vehicle stuck in the new fallen snow.
Carney, a
graduate of Nevada Union High School, was pronounced dead on the
arrival at 10 p.m. at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital where he
was taken by the Alleghany ambulance.
The cause of
death has not been determined yet, according to Nevada County
Deputy Coroner William Mullis. However, it is believed Mr.
Carney died from a combination of exertion and carbon monoxide
poisoning.
Mr. Carney
lived in Alleghany two years and attended school there. He and
an unidentified friend, believed to be from Roseville, spent
Friday night at American Hill cabin, a few miles north of
Alleghany. Snow fell throughout Friday night and their vehicle
bogged down when they left the cabin. The Golden Empire man
reportedly at for a period at the wheel while his friend pushed.
Mr. Carney collapsed twice during the futile attempts to get the
car going. The friend was unable to carry the unconscious man
and hiked into Alleghany.
Deputy
Sheriff Richard Brooks, who knew Carney and the friends, went to
the scene in the sheriff’s four-wheeled vehicle, which also
became mired down in snow.
Alleghany
residents became alarmed and got another snow vehicle and joined
the rescue party. When they took the exhausted man to the Brooks
home, he was conscious and stretched his hands toward the heat,
according to Mrs. Brooks.
“He lived
here for a long time and we all knew him,” she said.
Mrs. Brooks
reported that his clothing was frozen and that they were forced
to cut it from his unbending body. She described how former
school buddies attempted to help.
Mrs. Carney
was given treatment from the ambulance resuscitator and mouth to
mouth resuscitations both in the Brooks home and in the
ambulance enroute to the hospital.
The Carney
family lived in Alleghany prior to coming to Grass Valley about
eight years ago.
Mr. Carney
graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1965 and attended
Sierra College, where he was a member of the Antique Car Club.
He joined the United States Navy and served in Vietnam as an
electrician. He as discharged in April 1970 and joined the
merchant marines. He was life member of the Grass Valley
DeMolays.
Surviving are
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Carney; and a sister,
Charlene Brown, all of Grass Valley; a brother, James Carney of
Sacramento; and a grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Carney of

Savas "Sam" Kerkenides
March 26, 1947 ~ February 19, 2009
Below from Sam's web page ...
Friday, March 6, 2009
My mom (Nicole) was looking for important papers and
found this note by written by Sam. She thought it depicted his feelings
one hundred percent and wanted to share it with you...
I would like to leave a thought or two in
parting...
To my family and friends, I leave my love. You
have been my shelter through life's storms and your strength has carried
me more times than I can remember. I shall miss you. Should life's road
ever lead you past our home, you are always welcome to share our roof
and bread.
To my acquaintances, I leave my best wishes for
good health, a happy life and a successful career.
To All, thanks for the memories. - Sam
From Sam earlier ...
2/20/2003 ...
Sherry, After 30+ years in law enforcement -
22+ with the Ca. Highway Patrol and 9+ with Nevada Co. S.O.
(working for Bill Butler part of the time), I retired and moved
back to Crescent City, Ca. where I had gone to grade school and
where most of my family in this state live. Though I am not
currently married, I do have a lady. She and I went all through
grade school together and, while she is also a '65 grad, it is of
Del Norte High. I have three sons ages 31, 30 and 26. Only the 30
yr. old is married. He has MY two granddaughters, ages 9 & 6. They
live in No. Carolina where he is stationed and is a Staff Sergeant
in the USMC.
As I said earlier, I was working for
one of the two local Indian casino initially. I started out in
security. Recently I applied for and was hired as a gaming
commissioner by the Elk Valley Rancheria and am involved in
overseeing the general operations of the casino and assuring
compliance with the applicable gaming laws. There are plans in the
works for construction within the next two years of a
hotel/convention center/casino complex with an 18 hole Arnold
Palmer pro golf course here in Del Norte County. For those of you
who may be unfamiliar with the location of Del Norte County, we
are on the coast at the Ca/Ore state line - just below where Pat
Howard lives. It rains a bit here but that makes the redwood trees
grow big and the ocean fishing is the greatest, to say nothing of the river fishing -
which I won't since I don't!
That's it in a nutshell. Keep up the
great work. Hope to see you in '05!
Sam
1/20/2005 ...
Got married in Hawaii in April/04 to a lady with whom I
attended elementary school here in Crescent City prior to my
family's move to Grass Valley in the summer of 1961. We
re-acquainted while I was still living in GV and working
for the Sheriff's Dept.. No, she wasn't arrested. I have a
girl cousin here who is the same age as us and when I became
a "free" man, she couldn't stand it so she hooked me up with
her best friend. My wife (Nicole) is also a member of the
Class of '65 but of Del Norte High here in C.C. She is
assisting my cousin with the co-ordination of their reunion
which is scheduled for the long 4th of July weekend, which I
imagine ours will also be.
I am fully retired now and spend some of my time (when not
ocean sport fishing, golfing or doing Shriner stuff) playing
at selling things on Ebay under the business name "Kerkstuff".
It keeps me out of trouble most of the time. Nikki is in real estate
management.
That's about it for this note, except to say "Keep up the
good work". My wife wishes HER class had a beautiful website
like ours.
Thanks for all you do,
Sam

Greg W. Rogers
11th
grade photo
June 21, 1965
Workers from the Washington Ridge CYA Camp discovered the body of
Gregory W. (Greg) Rogers, 18, recent Nevada Union High School graduate
yesterday afternoon about two and one-half miles below Purdon Crossing
and four and one-half miles from the deep hole where he was last sighted
Monday.
Nevada County sheriff’s office organized an intensive three-phase search
yesterday when the high, swift river was lowered through the cooperative
efforts of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Water was held back at
Spauding dam and the high but rather clear water dropped over two feet.
Sheriff Wayne Brown in acknowledging the cooperation said “without
lowering the river I doubt we’d have found the boy’s body until much
later.
One
group of CYA youths searched up the river from the Highway 49 bridge on
the north bank and another group started down the river from Purdon
Crossing on the south bank. It was the latter search party which spotted
Rogers who was caught under rocks in the hole below the old Rome
powerhouse diversion dam.
By
using the nearby irrigation district road Deputy Coroner Paul Bergemann
of Nevada City was able to remove the body. Rogers was later transferred
to Hooper-Weaver Mortuary in Grass Valley.
Sheriff Brown’s third search party went directly to the large hole above
the Purdon Crossing where skin divers searched underwater. The group
consisted of three local diver, Mike Ellsworth, James Phelan and Dave
Boles and also four members of the Feather River Skin Diving Rescue
Unit; Homer Dryer of Yuba City and three Air Force enlisted men. Sheriff
deputies and jail trustee aided the divers with their equipment in the
rough terrain.
Rogers and a companion, Charles Fortner, 18, Grass Valley, were thrown
into the turbulent South Yuba River while” “shooting the rapids” below
Edwards Crossing Monday afternoon. Their raft struck an old powerhouse
dam site and tossed them over the falls. Fortner surfaced but Rogers was
missing. Search parties tried Monday night and Tuesday but the lowered
water on Wednesday brought results.
Young Rogers was born April 27th 1947 in Long Beach and spent
his early years in Rialto, coming to Grass Valley with his family three
and a half years ago.
On
June 11 he marched with the graduating class of Nevada Union High School
at the fairgrounds to proudly receive his high school diploma.
During the past year he had worked after school and weekends at
Montgomery Wards and as a pinsetter at the Grass Valley Elk’s lodge.
