Age 21 Auto Accident
The first fatality
on local highways during 1968 occurred Saturday evening on Highway
20 near Central House.
Millard Frederick
Groves, 21, lifetime resident of Camptonville, was pronounced dead
at Miners Hospital at 9 p.m.
Groves, on a
motorcycle, entered the highway from a private driveway just in
front of a car being driven by James Earl Engbloom, and Engbloom’s
car struck the young man.
Engbloom told the
investigating California Highway Patrolman that Groves landed on the
hood of his car and he didn’t want to stop quickly for fear the
young man would fall off and his car would run over him.
As soon as Engbloom
got his car stopped he and a passing motorist tried giving mouth to
mouth resuscitation to Groves. The accident was at 8:10 p.m.
Mr. Groves was born
in Grass Valley on January 8, 1947, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William
E. Groves of Camptonville.
In addition to his
parents he leaves a brother, Roy and sisters, Marylin Ness,
Williamette, Mildred and Claudia Groves, all of Camptonville.
Mr. Groves attended
elementary school in Camptonville and graduated from Nevada Union
High School with the class of 1965. He was employed as an equipment
operator at the Cal-Ida Glenbook Lumber Co.
Funeral services
will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hooper and Weaver Chapel with Judge
Acton Cleveland of Camptonville, officiating. Cremation will follow
at Marysville.
The family requests
that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a favorite charity in
Millard Groves’ name.
